Abstract

Sounding rockets and space satellites are, in principle, the same as optical and radio telescopes, being simply tools that enable astronomers to understand the universe. In a book on astronomy the results are more important than the tools, and so, in this chapter, I have outlined only some of the sounding rocket and spacecraft missions, to give a flavour of their contributions to astronomy. Their more detailed contributions are included in the general text above.
