The Influence of Dietary Fibre on Lipid Digestion and Absorption

  • Chapter
Dietary Fibre — A Component of Food

Part of the book series: ILSI Human Nutrition Reviews ((ILSI HUMAN))

Abstract

Even before dietary fibre had become a major focus for research, there was evidence to show that diets rich in plant cell walls were associated with elevated faecal energy losses in man, and that part of this increase was due to lipids (Widdowson, 1955; Southgate and Durnin, 1970; Baird et al., 1977; Kelsay et al., 1978). Such losses seldom amount to more than 2–4g/day however, and are of little nutritional significance in themselves.
