Abstract

Soon after the development of early CT2 cordless technology in Europe and the commencement of work on DECT, work began, in 1989, on a Japanese cordless standard, which has become known as the Personal Handyphone System (PHS). Public standards are now available, early field trials successfully completed and commercial service was introduced during 1995. This chapter explains the origins and timescales of PHS, the way the standards were developed and the envisaged developments in Japan. The PHS standard itself is presented later in this book, in Chapter 23.
