Information Algebras

Part of the book series: Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science ((DISCMATH))

Abstract

Valuation algebras represent the basic unifying structure behind the inference mechanisms for many different calculi of uncertainty or more generally for many formalisms of treating knowledge or information. In this chapter we introduce this concept and give some examples of valuation algebras. The following chapter is devoted to a more thorough discussion of the algebraic theory of valuation algebras.
