Abstract
The major function of the gastrointestinal system is to digest and absorb nutrients from ingested material. The ingested material travels down a series of tubes (esophagus, stomach, intestines), and accessory organs (liver, gall bladder, spleen) secrete compounds into the digestive tubes to aid in digestion. The oral cavity and esophagus are covered in chapter 10.
