Abstract

We apply great effort to the propagation and growth of a variety of crops, domesticated animals and beneficial microorganisms because of their obvious contribution to our welfare. We are, on the other hand, often inclined to relegate the remaining biota to the status of weeds or pests overlooking their actual necessity in maintaining the planetary biological web. Misunderstanding the need for a diverse biota has finally led to the realization of the ecological damage that now prompts us to seek to restore the complexity we have previously denied.
