Interaction of Uranyl with Humic and Fulvic Acids at High Ionic Strength

  • Chapter
Actinide Speciation in High Ionic Strength Media

Abstract

The binding of UO2 2+ to two different humic acids (one predominantly aliphatic and the other predominantly aromatic) and a fulvic acid has been studied at high ionic strengths (in NaCl medium) by solvent extraction. The results indicate that the aliphatic vs. aromatic nature of humic acids does not influence significantly the binding of UO2 2+. Increases in both the ionic strength and pH cause an increase in the binding constants of the complexes. The complexes with the fulvic acid are weaker than those with the humic acids.
