Abstract
Abdominal wall reconstruction is dependent on the etiology and the site of the defect, the size of the defect, and the quality of the surrounding tissue. Furthermore, the condition of the patient has to be taken into account. Distinction should be made between the emergency and the elective situation. In an emergency situation, the patient’s condition is compromised by trauma, and the patient is unprepared. In an elective situation, the informed consent of the patient is required. The patient must be aware of the planned operation, including the operative procedure and possible risks and complications. There should be no acute inflammatory problem threatening to cause complications such as infection and fistula.
