Umbilical Hernias

  • Chapter
Abdominal Wall Hernias

Abstract

Umbilical hernias are intimately related to the embryological development of humans; as such, they have probably occurred throughout primate evolution, producing significant morbidity and mortality. The first recorded mention of an umbilical hernia was made by Celsus, who in 100 AD called it “an indecent prominence of the navel.”
