Definition

“Genetic counseling is the process of helping people understand and adapt to the medical, psychological and familial implications of genetic contributions to disease. This process integrates the following:

  • Interpretation of family and medical histories to assess the chance of disease occurrence or recurrence.

  • Education about inheritance, testing, management, prevention, resources and research.

  • Counseling to promote informed choices and adaptation to the risk or condition” (Resta et al., 2006, p. 77).

This definition of genetic counseling was adopted by the National Society of Genetic Counselors in 2006, and it remains the standing definition of the service. The definition expresses the basic nature of the service which is grounded in the science of genetics as well as related sciences and the importance of competence in psychosocial counseling skills on the part of the practitioner.
