Abstract

By this stage in the book you have learned about the underlying architecture of the Oracle database, as well as how you go about creating and manipulating your own data within it. You might well have begun to create your own queries, and thought about applications where you might be able to use them. In Chapter 6, we looked at how Oracle helps you optimize your queries through the use of the Rule-and Cost-based optimizers. However, the optimizers can only suggest execution plans (in the case of the Cost-based optimizer on the basis of its own statistics), rather than optimize their actual execution. This is where tuning comes into play.
