Abstract
Dr. Jerry Krill is the CTO of the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), located in Laurel, Maryland. He has been at APL since 1973 assuming the CTO position in November 2010. At the 50,000-foot level, APL encourages and fosters innovation. More than 70 percent of APL’s nearly 5,000 staff members are scientists and engineers.
Because of his role at the premier institution of JHU APL, his influence extends to the U.S. Department of Defense and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency as well as to other prominent institutions. Dr. Krill was APL’s assistant director for programs since 2005. He oversaw APL’s 600-plus programs and led its quality management initiative. He is also an inventor with patents and patentspending as diverse as a plastic electric motor and a 3-D virtual reality display.
Before becoming assistant director, he led the Power Projection Systems Department for four years, also heading up the Precision Engagement and Infocentric Operations business areas. He spent the first quarter century of his career working in air defense and served as APL’s system engineer in its technical leadership role in developing the Navy’s Cooperative Engagement Capability.
Dr. Krill obtained his Bachelor and Master Degrees in Electrical Engineering from Michigan State University, Lansing in 1973 and 1974, and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1978.
