Abstract
Effective indexing is the key to making database applications find the results you want quickly and efficiently. In addition to the geometry and geography datatypes designed to store spatial data, SQL Server 2008 also includes a new type of index for use with spatial data, called (perhaps unsurprisingly) a spatial index. In this chapter I’ll explain how spatial indexes work, and how you can use a spatial index to improve the speed of your spatial queries.
