Abstract
Relapse is defined by ‘the emergence or exacerbation of positive symptoms which tends to be preceded by subtle changes in mental functioning up to 4 weeks prior to the event’ (American Psychiatric Association, 1987). Relapse prevention interventions therefore offer a way in which these ‘subtle changes’ can be identified, monitored and acted upon as soon as possible in order to prevent a relapse from occurring. This period prior to relapse is known as the ‘prodromal period’ and is normally characterised by changes in the person’s mood, behaviour and thoughts, which usually appear 2–6 weeks prior to relapse.
