Perpetual Peace: Abbé de Saint-Pierre

The Projet pour rendre la Paix perpétuelle en Europe(Project for Bringing about Perpetual Peace in Europe), by Abbé de Saint-Pierre, is an important forerunner in the conception of a European Union. It is far more extensive than earlier European peace plans. First published in 1712, the project went through several revised and enlarged editions. An abridged edition, Abrégé du Projet de Paix Perpétuelle en Europe(Abridgement of the Project for Perpetual Peace in Europe), also written by Saint-Pierre, was published in 1729 and 1737. This entry is derived from the abridged edition.

Charles-Irénée Castel, Abbé de Saint-Pierre (1658 – 1743) was born in the castle of Saint-Pierre-Eglise near Cherbourg in Normandy. At age nine, he entered the Jesuit school at Rouen. Later, he attended Jesuit colleges in Caen and Paris. He took minor Orders and was appointed Abbé de Tiron.
