Abstract
Longitudinal research discovered that the attitudes of the American majority population towards ethnic minorities had changed over the past decades: many American majority people subscribe to the general principles of ethnic equality but they do not subscribe to the implementation of these principles (Schumann, Steeh & Bobo, 1985). These contradictory trends might be explained by the gradual disappearance of overt unfavourable attitudes and gradual appearance of covert forms. In the Netherlands, most contributions regarding unfavourable attitudes towards ethnic minorities have concentrated on the more overt forms. Contrary to the United States, support for these overt attitudes has not declined (Scheepers, Felling & Peters, 1989, 1990; Scheepers, Eisinga & Linssen, 1994). Longitudinal research has shown that support for ethnic discrimination has grown since the mid-eighties (Scheepers, 1996; Scheepers et al., 1997; Coenders and Scheepers, 1998). This support turned out to be much more widely dispersed than overt unfavourable attitudes. Therefore, support for ethnic discrimination cannot be explained completely in terms of overt unfavourable attitudes towards ethnic minorities, previously shown to be present among the lower social strata. We propose to consider and test whether support for ethnic discrimination may also be explained by covert unfavourable attitudes presumably present among the intermediate social strata.
