Abstract

This paper presents seabird research and monitoring at Jan Mayen. We present an overview of the population status of seabirds, migratory birds, and the contaminant levels in different seabird species at Jan Mayen. By examining data on the breeding population of major seabird species, together with data on energy expenditure and diet, we estimated the food consumption by these populations and the fluxes of energy and nutrients from marine prey through the seabirds. With regard to future seabird monitoring it is recommended that an initial survey and comprehensive census are carried out on Jan Mayen.
