Abstract

The boundaries of Cumbria, established in 1974, embrace the two former counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, the Furness area formerly in Lancashire and a part of the former West Riding of Yorkshire in the south-east. In the west the Cumbrian coast stretches from the Solway Firth southwards to Morecambe Bay. Inland the county borders on North Yorkshire, Durham, Northumberland and the Scottish region of Dumfries and Galloway.
