Algal Physiology

  • Chapter
The Algae

Abstract

It is impossible to separate algal physiology completely from some aspects of ecology, and many of the problems of algal physiology are those of plant physiology. It is essential to distinguish between physiological phenomena primarily found in algae (e.g. certain pigmentations, phototaxis, luminescence, hydrogen adaptation) and general plant physiology in which algae are experimental organisms. It is intended to give only a very brief outline, as algal physiology has been comprehensively discussed by Lewin (1962) and specific topics are annually discussed in the Annual Reviews of Plant Physiology and Microbiology, and Advances in the Microbiology of the Sea.
