Abstract

It is particularly regrettable that the sections of the historical work of Ammianus Marcellinus that have survived deal only with the events of 353 onwards. There are a number of tantalising references later on in the extant books of the work to various persons and incidents of the period of the civil war between the eastern and western halves of the Empire in the years 350–3, but the main narrative, which may have been extensive, has been lost. Thus the pattern of events can only be known in outline.1
