Abstract
It is common in justifying an analysis of the Pentecostal scene to quote impressive statistics. The figures look even more spectacular when those of the classical Pentecostals are amalgamated with their contemporary Charismatic variant, and independent ministries with the renewed wing of the established mainline churches. From one perspective it is not unreasonable to merge them together since there is a considerable overlap of both theology and ethos. In combining all the streams of Pentecostalism David Barrett estimates that in 1970 there were some 68,000,000 people involved in the wider movement worldwide. By 1990 the figure had grown to approximately 405,000,000. The prediction is that by the year 2000 the total number will be in the region of 619,000,000. This number represents no less than 29 per cent of the entire Christian population of the world (Barrett, 1988).
