France in the Aftermath of War

  • Chapter
The World Reshaped

Abstract

On 9 May 1945, France was present at the signing ceremony in Berlin. Her territory had not been uniformly liberated the previous summer; the battle continued to rage throughout the winter to the north of Strasbourg and in the Colmar salient. The ‘Atlantic pockets’ on the west coast held out until the very final moment. It was now the task of de Gaulle’s provisional government to place a country ravaged by four years of war and suffering back on its feet.

The RUSI expresses its gratitude to Armées d’aujourd’hui magazine and its editor-in-chief, Cdr Philippe Weber, for permission to reproduce these articles, which first appeared in the April 1995 edition of the magazine.
