Abstract

Henley was an infirm child. It soon became clear that he suffered from tubercular arthritis. In early adulth000d he was treated in Edinburgh by Lister and had to have a foot amputated. His experiences in hospital produced Hospital Sketches, published in the Cornhill Magazine (1875).
