Abstract
Despite many predictions to the contrary, the Islamic revolution has survived for half a decade and appears set to continue. As the earlier chapters in this book have indicated, this success is partly due to the continuation of the war which has created a nationalistic unity and has enabled the government to impose strict economic, social and political controls which would have otherwise been quite unacceptable. At the same time, the regime has successfully repressed all criticism by imposing a tight control on the media and closing down all papers and publications which had at any time been critical of the regime. The only papers allowed to appear are either the official organs of the regime or those willing to endorse its politics and perpetuate the current religious hysteria. The universities which were the only other forum of open discussion, have also been closed for the past four years.
