Abstract
The author describes the multidisciplinary approach that is essential to the provision of high quality mental health services. The diversity of client needs means that more than one agency is involved. An overview of research in collaborative practice and an historical overview of service development supports the conclusion that co-ordinated services are better for mentally-ill people. Strategies for improving interprofessional and interagency work are discussed, especially in the context of primary health care teams.
