Abstract

This chapter deals with the debate between the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) on the modernisation of Theatre Nuclear Weapons (TNWs).1 Although this debate, both in the Alliance and in Washington, has largely focused on one specific weapon system — the successor to the Lance missile — a more general background to the various arms involved may be appropriate.
