Abstract

From the creation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801 until the establishment of the 26-county Irish Free State in 1922, all 32 counties of the island of Ireland were represented in the British Parliament at Westminster. The first Republican Parliament was constituted by Sinn Féin MPs elected to Westminster in December 1918 under United Kingdom electoral law. Voting was in single-member constituencies and election was by a plurality; in addition, two MPs were returned by Dublin University and one by the National University, the former chosen by Single Transferable Vote. The results for constituencies in the 26 counties that subsequently became independent are:
