Abstract
We soon opened at the Palomar to a so-so crowd. People were curious to hear this new kind of band. Although they had heard us on the NBC show, people listened and danced with mixed emotions. The recordings that we had made in New York had begun to leak into the California music shops. The crowds grew nightly, and after two weeks the floor was jammed. Soon there was no room to dance, and people just listened. Benny was not a good mixer at that time and he was awed by the reception. His clarinet spoke for him, though; he was playing with great inspiration.
