Abstract
From Allan Chappelow, ed., Shaw the Villager and Human Being: A Biographical Symposium (London: Charles Skilton, 1961) pp. 165–7; hereafter cited as Shaw the Villager. Allan Chappelow, photographer and author, is the editor of two extensive works, Shaw the Villager and Shaw, the Chucker-out (1969). He made many striking photographic studies of Shaw in old age. Shaw the Villager is a gathering of recollections by servants in the Shaw household at Ayot, local officials, tradespeople and neighbours. Mrs Edith Reeves and her husband ran a farm on the estate adjoining the Shaws’ property. They had been residents in the village, since 1899. Harry Higgs was the Shaws’ head gardener from 1901 to 1943. His wife, Clara, was housekeeper during the same period.
