Summary

Autocorrelation functions of profiles of a ground surface are measured in a number of directions at different angles to the lay, using a correlating computer on-line to a stylus instrument. The correlation length is found to vary in a systematic way with orientation and the average length and breadth of a grinding scratch can be deduced. Measurements on three ground surfaces yield ratios of scratch length to breadth between 5 and 7, compared with values of between 20 and 30 calculated from existing theories.
