Abstract
The first institution of higher learning attended by Copernicus was the University of Cracow. While he was a student there, no courses were offered in the Greek language. Some influential humanists were members of the faculty, but they had not yet succeeded in expanding the curriculum to include direct contact with the cultural achievement of ancient Hellas. Hence, during Copernicus’ stay in Cracow, whatever he learned about the Greek writers of antiquity came to him through the medium of Latin translations and commentaries.
