Abstract
We are fortunate to know so much as we do about the early years of Shakespeare. Of other Elizabethan dramatists we do not know anything like so much — with the possible exception of Marlowe ; of some of them we know hardly a thing. Take the case of Ben Jonson, the outstanding personality among them all, whose later years we come to know in more detail than any other’s.
