Abstract
Towards the end of Philip Gould’s life he came to lunch at The Times, where I work as a journalist. Afterwards, we headed toward the lift discussing the next election, Philip’s favourite topic of conversation. As we stood there waiting for the elevator to arrive, it suddenly struck me that this might be the last conversation of the many we enjoyed. That I might not see him again. So I turned and said. ‘Philip, I just want you to know that you have been a great inspiration to me.’ He smiled, got in to the lift and the doors shut. I was right. I didn’t see him again.
