Abstract

Insurance Engineering was established as an engineering discipline in the Industrial Revolution period to promote prevention of industrial losses though systematic investigations of the route causes of accidents and regular inspections of plants and equipment. This engineering discipline was instituted by the Insurance industry as a value added service to its clients and became a property conservation and a risk management function supporting insurance underwriters and their clients in managing their assets. In our modern times Insurance Engineering maintains its original charter, but is enhanced with sophisticated analytical tools, scientific models and experimental research in an integrated effort to prevent industrial and institutional property losses attributed to equipment failures, natural hazards, human error, and organizational deficiencies. In this paper we attempt to define the scope of Insurance Engineering.
