The announcement of the unusually rapid transport of ions in materials with the beta alumina crystal structure [1,2], and the invention of the Na/NaxS battery based upon the use of that material as a solid electrolyte [3] initiated a lot of research aimed at understanding of fast ionic transport in solids. There were also efforts in many laboratories to find other materials that also had this kind of behavior.
It was found that this unusual property was directly related to features of the crystal structure. This focused much attention upon the crystallographic aspects of such materials.
