Abstract
The aim of this review is to introduce and compare some of the latest progress in the development of decision support systems (DSSs) for the management of contaminated sites.
Integration of different disciplines, knowledge and decision support are critical in the remediation and management of contaminated sites. Many issues must be considered such as: reduction of risk, socio-economic impacts on the area, technical suitability and feasibility, time and cost perspectives, possible re-use options, stakeholders’ points of view.
Therefore, many efforts have recently been devoted to the definition and development of DSSs that, separately or jointly, can assist the responsible authorities in planning rehabilitation and management activities at the site of interest. Some existing DSSs are here presented. Differences and common aspects are discussed in relation to main assessment and management options.
