Abstract

In 1931, Buddhadev Bose felt able to announce that ‘the age of Tagore was gone’ (cited by Chakrabarty, 2000, p. 160). Bose’s pronouncement was certainly prescient. As we shall see in this chapter, Tagore’s ideal of Asian spirituality was soon to be overshadowed by other, newly emergent, ideologies.
