Abstract
The MPEG-2 standard has allowed Digital Television to become a reality at reasonable cost. The advent of MPEG-4 will enable content and service providers to deliver to their customers more advanced services with respect to MPEG-2. For these reasons, a scalable and adaptable device opened both to the consolidated past (MPEG-2) and to the incoming future (MPEG-4) is considered a key issue for the delivery of new services. This paper covers the design and implementation of a Java-based MPEG-4 terminal that has been developed in the context of the SOMMIT EU project. The terminal architecture is based on the MPEG standard and was used as a design and validation environment inside the MPEG-J Ad Hoc Group (MPEG-J AHG).
