Zusammenfassung

Gastrointestinale Infektionen und infektiöse Diarrhöen sind weltweit die vierthäufigste Todesursache. Die meisten gastrointestinalen Infektionen verlaufen als akute Ereignisse, Folge von Infektionen durch Bakterien, Viren und, im europäischen Raum seltener, durch Parasiten. Insgesamt gesehen sind Salmonellen und Campylobacter die häufigsten bakteriellen, Noroviren und Rotaviren die häufigsten viralen Erreger einer infektiösen Gastoenteritis. Clostridium difficile ist demgegenüber der häufigste im Krankenhaus erworbene Gastroenteritiserreger. Die klinischen Kardinalsymptome umfassen Diarrhöen, Fieber und krampfartige abdominelle Schmerzen, die mit wechselndem Schweregrad auftreten. Die einzelnen enteropathogenen Bakterien führen z. T. zu sehr unterschiedlich ausgeprägten klinischen Verlaufsformen.
