Hematoxylin bodies

  • Reference work entry
Rheumatology and Immunology Therapy

Definition

Hematoxylin bodies are denatured and homogeneous nuclear material with a characteristic histologic appearance derived from dead or injured cells. These native cells are often damaged by autoantibodies.

Full Text

LE cells are PMN or macrophages that have phagocytized round dense hematoxylin bodies. LE cells are found in the blood, bone marrow biopsies and pleural fluid. LE cells are only found in pleural fluids obtained from patients with SLE, thus helping in their differentiation from other forms of pleural disease.
