Due to the nature of the α β T cell receptor (TCR) the characteristic of T lymphocytes is to recognize foreign peptides only when they are bound to a particular allelic form of a major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecule. CD4+ T cells recognize peptides presented by MHC class II molecules, and CD8+ T cells recognize peptides presented by MHC class molecules. The exchange of the peptide as well as a different MHC molecule would abolish T cell activation.
