Organs and tissues in which mature immunocompetent lymphocytes encounter trapped antigens and are activated into effector cells. In mammals, the lymph nodes, spleen, and mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) like Peyer's plaques constitute the secondary lymphoid organs.
