Abstract

The historical optical light curve of OJ287 shows repeated outbursts at 11.65 yr intervals. Making use of computer modeling, we interpret this as resulting from a 9 yr orbital period in a binary system. Variability time scales are used to construct a mass model of the binary system, with derived masses of 5.109 M and 2·107 M, We discuss how binary systems such as in OJ287 may result from mergers of galaxies. We infer that the system must contain also a third supermassive black hole.
