Abstract

Use of color-color diagrams as an effective way to investigate the evolution of and mass loss from evolved stars has become possible with the publication of the IRAS point source catalog. We discuss, in particular, in the context of repeated helium shell flashing, stars that have unusually large 60 μm fluxes. These stars may be important in linking theory and observation on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB), but they represent only a modest percentage of all AGB stars and they contribute only a tiny fraction of the mass returned by AGB stars to the interstellar medium, contrary to conclusions arrived at in a recent paper by Thronson et al. (1987).
