Abstract

Brachytherapy is a radiation modality treatment where a radioactive source is placed inside or close to the tumor; this procedure is minimally invasive and in lung cancer is generally used for non-small cell lung cancer. The targets of brachytherapy treatment in lung cancer are diverse: we can use it with radical intention only if surgery or external beam radiotherapy cannot be realized, as an adjuvant to surgery in case of close or positive margins, as a boost to external beam radiotherapy, or with palliative intention in the case that the symptoms are related to intraluminal component of the lung cancer. Attending to the different brachytherapy techniques, we can refer to endoluminal, interstitial, or intraoperative. Technological advances in the last two decades have helped in the development of brachytherapy, but most of our knowledge is based on historical and retrospective studies.
