Cancer Treatment: An Interdisciplinary Approach

Part of the book series: Interdisciplinary Cancer Research ((ICR,volume 2))

Abstract

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) provides patients with breathing pure oxygen under higher-than-normal air pressure. Applications of HBOT mainly occur in the management settings for the treatment of radiation-related complications. To date, lymphedema, proctitis and cystitis, and osteoradionecrosis of the jaw have been the most common conditions for using HBOT in post-radiation therapy of breast, prostate, and head and neck cancer. While case reports, case series, and retrospective cohorts produced HBOT-favoring results, the current literature suffers from a paucity of clinical trials, preventing any recommendation against thinking of HBOT for all. However, clinical trials are ongoing and might change the future picture of this field. In addition, the interdisciplinary research can approach further by relating the physics of HBOT and cancer biomechanics and scheduling standard protocols of HBOT for cancer.
