In a computer, the set of storage locations that (a) is directly accessible by a processor or the arithmetic-logic unit without the use of the computer input-output channels, i.e., is integral to the computer and not in a separate storage unit outside the computer, (b) is addressable memory directly controlled by the central processing unit, (c) stores computer programs while they are being executed, (d) stores data while they are being processed, and (e) usually includes several types of storage, such as main storage, cache memory, immediate-access storage, random-access memory, and special registers, all of which can be directly accessed by the processor.
