Biogenous, or biogenetic, coasts are those that are developed mainly by the growth of plants ( phytogenetic coasts) or living organisms ( zoogenetic coasts). Mangrove coasts (q.v.) of tropical seas and reed coasts of shallow seas are of the phytogenetic type (Morskaja geomorphologia, 1980). Shelter from intensive open sea waves and frequent alternating submergence by seawater, combined with runoff from the land, are of the utmost importance for the growth of plant organisms forming the phytogenetic coasts. For this reason, phytogenetic shores are shallow shores exposed to tides and/or storm surges. Since even a small range of tide or storm surge results in the flooding of a wide belt of the shore with such a gently sloping surface, the shallowness of the shore is of special importance.

Mangrove Coasts

Shallow coasts of tropical seas develop swampy landscapes of mangroves—i.e., evergreen halophyte amphibian bushes and trees primarily related to the Rhizophora , Avicennia , and Bruguiera...
