Summary
In summary, it is clear that nucleotides participate at several levels in the nitrogenase reaction. Binding of nucleotides to the Fe protein result in protein conformational changes that are important for subsequent reaction steps. The hydrolysis of ATP by the Fe protein-MoFe protein complex is not absolutely required for electron transfer from the Fe protein to the MoFe protein, but does greatly accelerate this reaction. Finally, the hydrolysis of ATP to ADP and Pi is involved in controlling the dissociation of the Fe protein from the MoFe protein following electron transfer.
