Abstract.

A nonexpansive algebra is a pseudometric algebra in which the operations are all nonexpansive. We study such algebras, particularly in the case of algebras in permutable and n-permutable varieties, leading to new characterizations of such varieties. Free nonexpansive algebras are also investigated.
